Israel Returns to Baal-Worship

8:33 After Gideon died, the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They made Baal-Berith ¹  their god.

Hakim-hakim 14:2

14:2 When he got home, ²  he told his father and mother, “A Philistine girl in Timnah has caught my eye. ³  Now get her for my wife.”

[8:33]  ¹ sn Baal-Berith was a local manifestation of the Canaanite storm god. The name means, ironically, “Baal of the covenant.” Israel’s covenant allegiance had indeed shifted.

[14:2]  ² tn Heb “and he went up.”

[14:2]  ³ tn Heb “I have seen a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines.”
